Researchers interested in early childhood have found that mother/child ties are shaped in large part by the mother's beliefs about the child and their relationship (Goodnow, 1995; Moscovici, 1984), yet researchers have given little attention to this issue at the other end of life. Mothers and daughters do not experience benefits and costs from their relationship in an objective sense, but rather in a subjective sense. Each woman's beliefs about the other party is central in determining the nature of their relationship.
Although social constraints encourage women to be more dependent upon kin than men, it is not clear that such dependency generates closer relationships. In fact, parents are less satisfied with offspring who need them most. They may feel that they have failed as parents when their grown children cannot function independently (Pillimer & Suitor, 1991; Ryff, Lee, Essex, & Schmutte, 1994). Furthermore, if economic incentives were the motivation underlying intergenerational ties, we might expect daughters to maintain closer ties to fathers because they usually have greater financial resources than do mothers.
