In a more general sense the environment means the actual place where a group operates, the confines of available space, the facilities which are available, its use by other and very different organizations, and its accessibility to those who might wish to become members. The climate of opinion within an environment is another very important constraint. Groups have been set up in the teeth of hostile opposition which has ultimately proved beneficial because it increased the determination of the group members to succeed, but it can be a very destructive force, particularly if the opposition is not open but covert.

17 BEGINNING AT THE BEGINNING To understand this is fundamental, because where there are groups which are founded to produce changes in behavioural patterns but in which the members are compelled to attend, say as a condition of a probation order, then the power of the group to effect the required change has to come from a source other than that of the members’ need to belong – unless, of course, such a need can be developed as part of the group’s progress. In other circumstances the power of the group can be defined in terms of what members believe they can get out of it – unless, that is, they are aware of the existence of alternative situations which they believe may be available to meet their needs at less cost.

My suggestion is the more modest one that each species, in each situation, needs to deploy its information about the world in whatever way is most useful for taking action. ‘Constructing a model in the head’ is a helpful way to express how it is done, and comparing it to virtual reality is especially helpful in the case of humans. (Dawkins 1989: 283) There is also the fact that we are not able to get outside of ourselves to see what we might look like to others. But we can monitor the apparent effect that we have upon others and in this way we can begin to develop expectations of how we will be received and add these impressions to the ideas we have of ourselves formed from our inner awareness of ourselves to make up a self-image.
