Like the developmentalists he advocated that the learning environment be shaped to fit the development of the individual child and that the subject matter be integrated and connected to the students’ lives.

In this country the focus of developmental psychology and progressive, child centered pedagogy has historically been on the decontextualized individual who develops through natural and autonomous processes. The analysis in this chapter identifies the need to define the subject of study as the dialectical relationship between the individual and the cultural milieu and, in addition, to fully situate this development in a macrolevel analysis of cultural and historical development and the ways in which it is influenced by politics, power, and privilege.
