Even if, as was the case in some cities, guild restrictions encouraged the dispersion of some parts of the process to the countryside, cloth making was always strictly dependent on a center, unlike wood or stone work, which had to be done locally in every commune and hamlet. Within the cloth-making trades, there was a definite hierarchy of wealth: drapers and hosiers near the top, then shearers, tailors, and dyers, with weavers and wool carders near the bottom. In the leather trades, there were fewer distinctions and less wealth generally, but furriers were, unsurprisingly, rather better off than the rest.

The council had little doubt that they had not made a mistake. Jacques d’Albenas agreed with Robert and also fulminated against the clergy.
