A summary view of the role of white matter is that, in contrast to the information processing capacity of gray matter, it is critical for information transfer (Filley, 2005). Both capacities are necessary for the normal function of the nervous system, whether involving sensory and motor activities or the complex domains of cognition and emotion. An intriguing aspect of DTI is its capability for fiber tractography (see Section 4 in this book). While technical concerns are not trivial, the opportunity to map out the trajectory of white matter tracts throughout the brain is enticing.
Both tracts project anteriorly to the orbitofrontal cortex but have different posterior terminations; the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus projects to the occipital lobe, whereas the uncinate projects to the anterior temporal lobe. A multiple regions-of-interest (ROIs) approach allows the separation of the two tracts. A common ROI is delineated around the external capsule (slice 1) while other separate ROIs are delineated around the occipital (slice 2 and 3) and temporal (slice 4) white matter.
