These collectively have been grouped under the title of anthropological evaluation since the methods used are qualitative or ethnographic, to illuminate practices through the interpretation and construction of individuals and groups in particular situations.
The British Educational Research Association’s (1998) submitted response to the DfEE project argues that all types of research are vital in a democracy. Research which focused only on children’s learning in classrooms would be very narrow and would fail to bring to bear many of the factors which impact on a child’s ability to take advantage of what the teacher in the classroom has to offer. This is even more starkly apparent when the learner is a very young child. In this respect the role of the research community in early childhood education as well as a number of relevant profession organisations, national and international, will be important in helping to shape future policy and practice as well as influence the direction of future research.
Our hope is to present them as complementary and encourage their joint use to investigate fully a particular topic or area. Studies of the ways in which women use language should encourage us to see that we can hold debates in which we seek affiliation, not confrontation (Tannen 1990). Perhaps we in Western societies need to develop our ability to find solutions in which noone ‘loses face’, a point supported by Professor Charles Handy (1994), the business guru. In this chapter we wish to encourage further this early years debate/ deliberation.
