I avoided most of these places in fear of the dreaded attack. However, I am enjoying my successes now and it's wonderful! I took the risk and enrolled in a floral class, which I've wanted to do for a long time. I was not comfortable the first couple of times, but I told myself, That's okay, I'm bound to be anxious, and besides, maybe there are others here feeling the same way. From then on it was great; I hated to see the first session end. I am now enrolled in two more sessions and can't wait to begin again.

It is not a bad idea to have a catastrophic thought about getting into an acci- Page 20 dent on the freeway; such thoughts could alert us to the need to be extra careful while driving. But what is troublesome about catastrophic thoughts is that they occur with such frequency. They also seem to have a life of their own. The more we try to control them or eliminate them, such as by distracting ourselves from them, the more troublesome they seem to become. Perhaps they are so frequent and so automatic because we try so hard not to have them and not to be alarmed by them.

Judy Page 3 Imagine for a moment that you are driving down the freeway. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, your heart begins to race. Your breathing becomes labored. You find it difficult to swallow. Feeling light-headed, you grip the steering wheel and notice that your hands are perspiring. A feeling of panic washes over you. Your mind races as you try to grasp what is happening. You struggle to stay in control, but the harder you try, the more out of control you feel. You tell yourself, Just stay calm!
