First, news receipts such as oh display a commitment to the adequacy of the talk that they receipt. Such a commitment goes against the neutral stance valued in news interviews and courtrooms. Second, talk in news interviews and courtrooms is produced for overhearers – the jury or the news audience. The news receipt token would be inappropriate in such environments as they would suggest that the questioner is the primary addressee of the talk rather than being merely a conduit to jury or audience.

Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson (1974) have sketched out some of the basic rules of interaction. These rules do not govern what people say – although interaction tends to follow the rules. Rather they are a normative system that makes departures and deviations notable. Thus when a speaker starts to speak in the midst of another speaker’s turn this is a notable thing. It might be treated as rude, or perhaps taken as a sign of intimacy (Coates, 1995, has shown that there is more overlap in talk between people in close relationships).

Features of formality are designed to work against this inattentiveness. For example, the organization of the talk, its volume, its pace, its segmentation through within turn pauses all contribute to making it clear in this environment. The art in focus groups is to work with the practical emphasis on clarity and shared attention, but against some of the stiffer features of interaction in formal settings. Want to know more?
