Bourdieu describes habitus as a style, that informs a person’s practical actions, discrepancies and exceptions – it describes how the ‘me’ that Archer sees as imposed by context and culture exists within the ‘I’ that individuals know themselves to be. Agency, thus, can be seen as emerging from the balance between the traditional logic of the habitus, an individual’s experience and opportunity and their own personal attributes. ‘It is important,’ Laura Ahearn writes, ‘to ask how people themselves conceive of their own actions and whether they attribute responsibility for events to individuals, to fate, to deities, or to other animate or inanimate forces’ (2001: 113).

However marriages may be contracted, the majority of marriage partners aspire to love and partnership and this can easily be forgotten when faced with the kinds of negotiation of space and structure that are the norm for would-be cross-border marriage migrants. Marriage migration is just one route across borders but it is argued here that this route, the shape it takes, its opportunities, drawbacks, pitfalls and compromises are subtly gendered and have multigenerational implications for the migrants and their families in both countries of migration and countries of origin.

The capabilities approach is universalist and related to the achievement of individual goals, something Nussbaum considers particularly relevant to the study of women’s lives whose personal goals are so often subsumed in the goals of others. The capabilities she suggests as central to human functioning include the most basic of capabilities to enjoy a normal, healthy life span and to experience the giving and receiving of love and care. Nussbaum’s list of capabilities also include more abstract capabilities such as the capability to have an emotional life, to play and to demonstrate practical reason in relation to one’s life through critical reflection on life plans and possibilities.
