Such corrective action repairs the damage to our social ties and our valued relationships. It helps us to get back on track. However, excessive guilt robs life of its joys and leads to social paralysis. It may damage our relationships and weaken our bonds and create a breach between ourselves and others. It alienates us from society, making us feel isolated and vulnerable to punishment and exclusion. 38 Studies based on photographic expressions of self-conscious emotions have so far failed to find distinctive features of guilt.
Not surprisingly, the shame experience is often accompanied by a desire to hide—to sink into the floor and disappear. And . . shame can engender a hostile, defensive type of anger . . presumably aimed at a real or imagined disapproving other.
