SAP actually started to create their solution products on a Sybase database first because Sybase was the dominant player at that time. It didn’t work very well, however, in terms of code and performance. SAP wanted to work with Sybase to improve this, but Sybase just turned up its nose. SAP needed a certain type of technology that Sybase refused to provide because Sybase thought the old ways were technically superior. That might have been true, but it didn’t solve a business problem. So SAP went to Sybase’s competition, and that’s how Oracle caught up with Sybase.
