We were able to collect data from students that might not have been made available to tutors as researchers. We also gained important insights from tutor diaries, meetings and discussions. The tutors, on the other hand, gained a greater understanding of FE and of teaching and learning, and some utilised the opportunity to rethink aspects of their practice, and to introduce changes, directly as a result of research involvement (see Anderson et al. 2003; see also James 2004). It also meant that tutors maintained control of their own teaching practices.

As the project progressed, case studies were updated progressively, focusing on deepening understanding, mapping change, and examining in depth the impact of various interventions into site culture – either initiated by the participating tutors or externally imposed. As a first step in moving beyond individual case studies, the research teams responsible for each site produced short summaries of each case study to enable the whole team to share an understanding of all the sites without being swamped by detail.

Artefacts and institutions not only are expressions of cultural practices, but also embody such practices and thus play an important role in the continuation of cultures. For example, the equipment in a language lab or an IT room physically represents a particular pedagogy, as do the organisation of a classroom or a lecture theatre and even the architecture of a college building or site. Without artefacts and a particular physical environment it would be much more difficult to sustain a particular learning culture.
