Russell, a large, kindly man, was known affectionately as Uncle Bud by the Texas underworld. Bonnie Parker certainly knew about Uncle Bud, for Clyde referred to him several times in his letters to her while he was waiting in the Waco Jail. Uncle Bud eventually called for Clyde on April 21, 1930.

He remembered, years later, how Bonnie had told him that she would like to be a singer, an actress, or even a poet. Bonnie left her job at the cafe on Houston Street just as the Great Depression was starting and even in prosperous Dallas unemployment was rising. She could not find another job.
