The book’s narrative aims to present the process, emphasising the experience of wondering and uncertainty, as well as finding out, making links between ideas and finding coherence in the daunting, messy particularity of information we collected about 19 women’s becoming mothers for the first time and the research team’s relationships to these data. Identity and identity change Since it became a core area of social science research in the 1950s, the study of identity has been approached through many disciplines (psychology, sociology, anthropology, geography and history, and the already interdisciplinary areas of cultural, feminist, disability, ethnic and organisational studies).
