Preclinical experimental transplantation learn that's according to microsurgical types in rats fulfills imperative stipulations for contemporary organ transplanta tion learn: just about all organ grafts could be played at the rat with an volume of technical attempt that remains justifiable. therefore transplantation versions which are analogous to human organ transplantation will be built, validated, and evaluated. This fulfills an important situation from the point of view of surgical procedure. With the species rat, we've an exceptional number of genetically varied inbred traces. From the immunological perspective this can be an vital prerequisite for the research of preclinical transplantation types that may be anticipated to provide controllable, reproducible effects. In vivo experimental effects may be supplemented by means of and correlated to in vitro assessments. in recent times those experimental effects are being drastically elevated and extra accurately outlined by means of the appliance of immunohistological tools which were verified lately in Kiel. during this publication we are hoping to give a pass component of the microsurgical types in use this present day and of present immunological and immunohistological versions. additionally, we want to list the current kingdom of microsurgical organ transplantation learn and to teach its courting to the present country and improvement of scientific organ transplantation. a distinct point of our Kiel study workforce is the long term, well-functioning, interdisciplinary cooperation among surgical procedure, immunology, and pathology. via this cooperation we strive to supply an environment within which theoretical and useful viewpoints can at the same time impact every one other.

The following part deals with the program we offer the young scientist who starts to work with experimental microsurgery. First he (or she) is instructed on how a normal healthy rat looks. Then we emphasize some special symptoms of pneumonia, peritonitis, etc. This is important for a reliable follow-up after major surgery in the rat, especially if the animals have been treated with immunosuppressive drugs. Surgery in the rat as well as in humans can be performed only with excellent anesthesia. We favor ether anesthesia for rat microsurgery, because it is easy to learn for the beginner and even major surgery such as pancreaticoduodenal transplantation or liver transplantation can be performed without anesthesiological problems.

The end-toside anastomosis is essential for rat organ transplantation. It is a more difficult vascular anastomosis, but it is necessary for the following transplantation models: abdominal heart (Fig. 1), lung, spleen (Fig. 2), vascularized skin flap, kidney (Fig. 3), small intestine, pancreas (Fig. 4), testicle, and liver transplantation. Three different examples are outlined here. A simple operating technique is used in spleen transplantation. Only two endto-side anastomoses must be performed, one in the arterial system and one in the venous system.

Cuff techniques have only rarely, if ever, been used clinically, but there have been a number of publications about their application with laboratory animals in recent years. The model of heterotopic cervical heart transplantation is, for example, very useful for evaluating the effect of immunosuppressive protocols, because the function of the heart can be observed either by inspection or palpation in nonanesthetized animals. An example of such a study is given below. Accessory Heart Transplantation in the Rat The heart graft is harvested following the technique of Ono and Lindsey (1969).
