Most of the men in Sergeant Milton Knight’s Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion S-2 section, were armed with M1 rifles and Thompson submachine guns, even though the table of organization and equipment (TO&E) called for most of them to be armed with carbines, a weapon notorious for jamming and inaccuracy. “Our carbine was, to my way of thinking, a toy.

The trip was plenty miserable from there out. ”14 Major Neptune was surprised that more men didn’t get seasick. “It was beautiful sailing weather. Practically no one got sick from motion. The poor men got sick from the lousy food. m. ”15 The food and even the eating arrangements followed the same caste system, as Lieutenant Breard soon discovered. “They had standing room for the enlisted men to eat. ”16 The unequal treatment of the men and the officers naturally bred resentment among some of the enlisted men, such as Private Ussery.

We stood up, had our equipment check procedure, and I was standing in the door as we approached the town of Gela. I would guess that our altitude was about eight hundred feet, because the scheduled jump height was five hundred feet. Suddenly we were in the center of what could best be described as a large Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Puffs of smoke and fireballs began to appear near our plane, and tracers could be seen headed our way.
