To get there we flew to Tokyo and then took the bullet train to Niigata on the western side of Japan.
At one of the stops John discovered a woman who was selling fresh bread, so he bought a loaf and took it along to the restaurant car for our lunch. It was a great improvement on the stale dark bread we’d been served until then. At the next stop quite a few of our people, unbeknown to each other, went searching for bread sellers. There was great amusement as the fresh bread was piled higher and higher in the restaurant. Gough was particularly interested when the train stopped at Petrovsky Zavod.
