Processes such as the peer review of scientific papers exemplify this approach, for they enable shared meanings to emerge from formal discussion of findings from multiple sources. It is important to recognise that some criticisms of positivism remain even within this very different kind of interpretation. In particular, where the objective is the study of human behaviour, the espousal of a series of viewpoints, each of which comes from within a scientific paradigm (and especially where quantitative data is privileged) runs the danger of returning to a simplistic ‘observation of the observable’.

Narrative is a two-way process, with storyteller and listener. Wise professionals can readily adapt to both roles – often simultaneously – which is where real conversation and real understanding begin. S ocial psychologists have explored how people respond to stories in some depth. At a basic level, engagement in the story evokes ‘as if’ responses: in a drama, the audience’s response to hearing a shot fired might be very similar to their reactions if they heard the same thing in real life – including the terrified screams!

Its methodologies, most notably those based on ethnography, support this attempt to acknowledge and give proper weight to the complexity of human and social perspectives. Emerging from these methodologies it is striking just how much the emphasis has shifted towards a central role for narrative and story. It is timely now to turn to a more in-depth discussion of these ways of depicting reality.
