His works have been translated into twenty-seven languages. Williams received an honorary degree from Harvard University in 1982. Williams began psychoanalysis in 1956, the year his father died, and, in 1963, suffered a prolonged period of depression after the death of his lover, Frank Merlo, of lung cancer. Williams had met and fallen in love with Merlo in 1947, while living in New Orleans. The two traveled together to Italy where Williams prepared to write The Rose Tattoo, a work that, in many ways, tells the story of his meeting Merlo.
