Furthermore, living scattered across the countryside rather than in agglomerated settlements and towns, the mezzadri were far less affected by the crisis in municipal finances. A more technical feature of the mezzadria contract worked in the peasants' favour in these years of galloping inflation. This feature was the traditional system of 'estimates' (stime) for livestock and seed.

At the same time that the link between tenant and proprietor deteriorated, so the bond tying the mezzadro to the land was seriously weakened. In the past the security of the mezzadro s tenure had been a major factor in the stability of Tuscan rural society, despite hardship, toil, and a depressed standard of living. By contrast, insecurity and declining living conditions were marked features of the new commercial system. The growing tax burden, of course, played an important role here. The closer relationship between city and countryside now linked through the person of the tax collector, was not, however, the sole source of a slow expropriation of the mezzadri.

Unfortunately, a word of caution is necessary. The social and economic history of the war years is still an underdeveloped subject in Italian history, and one made particularly tentative by the fact that some of the most important sources - the archives of the army and of the economic ministries - have not been made public.
