Firms, clubs and societies were also included, bar those of a purely political, educational or charitable nature. Those who sold state monopoly goods were exempt, however. The class to which each enterprise was assigned was calculated with reference to the nature and type of the enterprise, the number of rooms occupied and the rent payable upon them, the number of employees and, most importantly, the value of its assets.

5a-d shows a similar pattern of consumption per capita in the interno between 1880 and 1897, especially when three-year moving averages are constructed. There is a relative plateau of consumption during the first three quarters of the 1880s followed by a dramatic and virtually continuous fall thereafter.
