This four-year college was established for specific purposes because of the location of the city. Tianjin was the center of industrial and commercial city in northern China. Anthony Li described the university as: in the year 1925, the college department was formally opened with two faculties, industry and commerce with 11 Jesuits, 6 Chinese and 11 European lay teachers on the faculty. 21 Seminaries There were many seminaries where the priests were trained in China. ”22 Roman Catholics were far behind Protestants in their general educational achievements.

Though my purpose is to discover materials that have not been mentioned previously by researchers, I also intend to dispute some views I disagree with and to offer some comments and reinterpretations so that the history of Fu Ren can be rectified. Fu Ren University deserves an authentic and complete history of its own as any other universities do. Unfortunately because of different interests and political stands such as those of the pro-Nationalists or pro-Communists, part of Fu Ren’s history has been interpreted differently.

He gives some general information on the establishment and development of the university during this period: the mission of the university, structural and curriculum development, as well as student enrollment. Wu Xiao-xin, in his dissertation “A Case Study of the Catholic University of Peking During Benedictine Period (1927–1933)”,28 gives a synthesized view of the university during this period. He points out that the university was a joint effort of the East and the West: how the Chinese scholar and Benedictine Fathers worked together, registration, curriculum and instruction, as well as some political involvement with antiJapanese movement.
